Investing in the Future of Music In Ōtautahi Christchurch – Building with CSM

For 70 years, the Christchurch School of Music has nurtured generations of musicians, despite never having a true home of our own.
When the Christchurch City Council called for expressions of interest for one of the last two plots of land in the Performing Arts Precinct we jumped at the opportunity and CSM became the Council’s preferred option. We agree that we are the best option for Otautahi to complete the Precinct.
Being located in the heart of Otautahi’s Performing Arts Precinct, a purpose-built CSM hub will be able to continue to foster collaboration, growth and connection with our student community and other arts organisations. But it would be more than just a
building, it would be a place of belonging, achievement, joy and community – a life-
enhancing gift for generations to come.
With the CCC offer to put in the land in a Trust we set about planning.
Hamish Peddie at Wilkie+Bruce Architects designed a purpose built home for us.
Understanding our need for a sustainable, affordable, musically wonderful home they fit in a rehearsal hall, community space, teaching rooms, music and instrument storage and an admin space.
Now in 2026 we have secured some larger scale donors and commissioned a great fundraising strategy which helped us see that we could ask the Christchurch City Council to make a $4million contribution to our build. (This is approximately 1/3 of the cost).
After receiving some positive feedback we were expecting that this would be the in the 2026/27 Annual Plan but have discovered it was not. Currently we are working with Councillors and staff to get this through.
If we are able to secure funding from the Christchurch City Council, we will launch our campaign to raise the remainder of the funds and Wilkie+Bruce Architects will complete the design.
